Timothy Walsh
Timothy Walsh began his training at Brent Street Studios in Sydney. He has completed both ATOD tap and jazz syllabus’ and received up to Advanced One accreditation in RAD. He was accepted in to Sydney’s Newtown High School of the Performing Arts and whilst a student was chosen to represent the school in the United States.
His time spent overseas would see him train with Alvin Ailey American Dance Theatre, New World School of the Arts, University of the Arts and the Purchase Conservatory. Timothy placed second in the state for HSC Dance and upon completion of year twelve was offered scholarships to train at dance conservatories overseas.
Timothy decided to remain in Australia and undertake his tertiary dance training at the Victorian College of the Arts where he graduated with a Bachelor Degree in Dance (first class honors). Upon his graduation Timothy was awarded the Orfloff Prize for Most Outstanding talent and was offered a company position with Tasdance in his final year.
Whilst at Tasdance, he travelled and performed throughout Australia in works by renowned Australian and international choreographers, Anna Smith, Larissa McGowan, Tanja liedtjke, Byron Perry, Gavin Webber, Raewyn Hill and Huang Yi. His performances with Tasdance would lead to him being a longlist nominee for an Australian Dance Award for Best Male Dancer. He was also named dancer to watch and best male dancer in Dance Australia’s critic’s choice circle in 2012 and 2013. Timothy has worked with other Australian dance companies Dancenorth and Lucy Guerin inc.
He has also worked with independent choreographers Shelley Lasica, Brooke Stamp, Stephanie Lake, Bec Jensen, Sarah Aiken, Atlanta Eke and Stephen Agisilaou’s Vertical Shadows. His performance with Vertical Shadows saw the Age write of him “With his strength and control, Timothy is sure to be a force in the Melbourne dance community”. Timothy has also established himself as an independent choreographer. His choreographic work includes ‘Remind Me Again in 24 hrs’ (Menagerie Collective), ‘De-Mystifying the Out of Body Experience’ (Lucy Guerin Inc’s, Pieces for Small Spaces), ‘Post Phase; The Summit is Blue’ (Dancehouse) and ‘Semaphore’ (Arts House). For his work ‘Semaphore’ The Age wrote, “The interspersed dance brackets were consistently engaging, Timothy Walsh’s choreography for three dancers creating dynamic, precisely synchronised symmetries of rapid, fixed upper-body poses.”
His choreographies have been toured throughout Australia. Timothy was recently awarded an Australia Council ArtStart grant to support and establish his choreographic practice, which saw him travel throughout Europe. He was the first ever recipient of Chunky Move’s Choreographic Internship in which he assisted choreographer Stephanie Lake on her work ‘Aorta’, which would go on to receive an Australian Dance Award for Best Choreography.
Timothy recently joined Melbourne based dance company BalletLab, and will make his premiere with the company in their latest work ‘Ever’ to premiere in the 2017 Melbourne festival. Alongside his work as a dancer, choreographer and teacher Timothy is also a masters candidate at Melbourne University, undertaking a Masters of Art History and Curatorial Studies
